If you’re having trouble with AOL mail on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, this article can help you out. There are two major scenarios to consider:

You’ve received an email from AOL informing you of new security measures in place. As an example, here’s how it would look:

Alternatively, you may find that you are unable to access your AOL mail on your Mac or iPhone and that they keep asking you for the password, which you repeatedly type in and which never works, despite the fact that you are certain you know what the password is.

For those who identify as such, please continue reading this article until you reach the section that addresses the issue of “new security measures.”

Identifying And Resolving The Updated Security Measures Issue

In an email to everyone with an aol.com email address, AOL informed us that, in order to continue receiving our aol.com email, we would most likely need to login into our accounts again, this time using a more secure sign-in technique that had recently been implemented.

Users Of Aol’s Webmail Service

First and foremost, if you receive your email on a Mac (or a PC) by opening a web browser and putting in “aol.com,” and then reading and creating mail from that location, you will not be required to do anything else. Your AOL mail will continue to function as before, without any changes.

Users Of The Mac Mail Application

As of macOS 10.13 and earlier, AOL believes the Mac Mail software is not secure, and they will not allow Mail to connect to their servers– unless you generate a separate, “app-specific password” while signing into aol.com and use that password– rather than your “real” AOL password– in the Mail app.

Although you may be aware of the password for your AOL account–one way to make certain is to go to aol.com in a browser and sign in there to demonstrate that you are aware of it–Mail on a Mac will not operate with that password if your Mac is running 10.13 or earlier. The solution: an AOL-generated “app password” that is unique to the Mail software and can only be used with it.

It’s simple to create an app-specific password, and AOL even provides instructions. The fundamentals are as follows:

  • Sign in to your AOL account by visiting www.aol.com in a browser.
  • To access your account settings, select your name in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • In the left-hand pane, select “Account Security” from the drop-down menu.
  • Select “Generate and manage app passwords” from the drop-down menu (look around, the link is small)
  • Fill up the blanks with a password name. Something along the lines of “Mail app for Mac” would be appropriate. After that, click “Generate” to generate a password.
  • Copy the password (or else write it down) and use it when logging into AOL for the device you’re attempting to repair or replace it with.

You have the option to start over if you make a mistake. There’s nothing to be concerned about. Please keep in mind that you will not be able to search up an app-specific password at AOL after the fact. You can create a new one, but you will not be able to check up on the previous ones.

In The Case Of Iphone And Ipad Users

It could be as simple as logging in once again to your account. If you’re using an iPhone or iPad that’s not too old, try this:

Step 1: Start by going to Settings > Passwords & Accounts on your iPhone (or iPad) and entering your Apple ID and password.

UPDATE FOR iOS 14: To access Accounts, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.

Step 2: Sign in to your AOL account.

Step 3: You’ll be presented with a screen that includes a large AOL logo at the top and the words “Sign in.” If your email address is already in the system, that’s fantastic. If it isn’t there, add it. Then, (this is critical!) select Next (since the password box is not on this screen, but rather on the following screen).

WARNING: If you don’t see the sign-in screen, select “Delete Account” and then select “Add Account” to add the account again. Make certain you select “Aol” from the list of account types (which includes iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, Google, Yahoo!, AOL, and Outlook.com). Then follow the steps outlined in this document.

Step 4:enter your password and then click “Sign in.” To sign into AOL on your iPhone if your “actual” AOL password does not work, create an app-specific password by following these instructions and using it to sign into AOL.

Step 5: Finally, here are the terms and conditions. Everything is ok to me. All you have to do is press the “Agree” button at the bottom right of the screen.

Identifying And Resolving Other Aol Mail Issues

It is necessary to identify the source of the problem before proceeding forward. It’s possible that your settings used to work, but no longer do. That could be because you have a Verizon.net email address, which is managed by AOL, and the settings that used to work are no longer functional.

The Mail Settings Lookup feature on Apple’s website can help you figure out what your email settings should be. You don’t even need to enter your genuine email address, in case you are concerned about disclosing your personal information. Just make sure that the back end is proper. In the case of “hot [email protected],” for example, you might check up the settings for “[email protected]” and retrieve the information you require, as seen below:

You will see that the incoming mail server is map.aol.com, but the outgoing mail server is smtp.verizon.net, which is a different domain. Initially, you might have assumed that they were both Verizon.net or AOL.com, but that is not the case. Naturally (at least according to my understanding), you’d use your actual email address as the username.

I understand that it can be difficult, especially when the settings for a “genuine” AOL address look like this:

(Consider going back to the Mail Settings Lookup page. It’s an excellent source of information.)

It’s possible that the problem is not with your device. It’s possible that the issue is with AOL. Visit the website Downdetector.com to find out more. On September 9th, 2020, the following information was obtained from that website:

Perhaps it wasn’t you who was experiencing problems receiving AOL mail on that particular day. It appears like AOL was experiencing technical difficulties.
